    Goddard was engaged by Smith & Nephew to redesign a recently acquired product. An initial assessment uncovered issues related to ergonomics, use case, and engineering. To better understand in-use failures and errors being encountered, user studies were conducted. Design and engineering teams then worked in tandem to develop concepts to improve product setup, how it communicates to the user, and patient safety. Final system engineering was conducted to lay out all parts and components. Considerations were made to meet FDA regulations for EMI/RFI within an OR. Disposable costs of this product were also drastically reduced. Key innovations to this device include the relocation and integration of a new reciprocating pump, addition of a lit ring on the dome, and creation of a multi-directional key for the disposable kit. This product continues to be the market leader in hydro-surgery systems.
